The World’s Largest Catamaran

Pendennis Shipyard completed the largest catamaran on the Earth called Hemisphere. It was designed for American owners. A diversity of yachts has been chartered since the 1990s. For example, there are mono and multihulls, sailing and motor, small and large boats. This variety gave a good experience to find out what they really want for their own boat. After 2001, the holders enjoyed few patents in the Caribbean. Captain Gavin Bladen was on board. Plungers decided to have their own catamaran. Their diving instructor Bladen put as purpose to move on something bigger.

It was a luckless search of a board in existence, so they decided to build a new one with a size 35 meters. Van Peteghem Lauriot Prevost was chosen to be an architect of this project. These multihull specialists were responsible for BMW Oracle, the winner of 33rd America’s Cup, for French sailing catamaran with a size 41.5 meter and Groupama 3, a record holder for Jules Verne. The new boat became 44.2 meters in the end. This size is as large as it could be because it can’t go over 400 gross tons according to different world rules.

They choose US yard Derecktor to be initially for the build. In late 2005, the work was started, and the date of the completion was set in November 2007. However, in 2008 Derecktor had financial difficulties, and the boat has run later. So they started searching for another builder.

Pendennis choose from 18 shipyards based on engineering ability, the capacity to manage with the beam and favorable exchange rate.

The boat arrived on 2009 in Falmouth, UK, with 13 crispers worth of facility on board. After two years, they moored up Hemisphere out of the Pendennis dry dock in which they completed her. It was ready for sailing in Mediterranean.

Responsibility for the design of the exterior spaces for guests and interior was put on Michael Leach Design. VPLP by purpose intend to keep the extensive deck areas uncluttered by bollards, winches and other deck fittings were well disguised. MLD created places for sitting and talking and made with the help of this most of the possible.

You can access Sundeck from the basic aft deck by dint of stairs on the larboard. A spa pool is located between two helm stations. Dining table called aft in a shape of oval has world map etched into its glassy top. Aft is for 12 guests. You can enclose the area in bad weather with a shield and air conditioned.

A saloon is 100 square meters and has few distinct zones. You can enter it by two crooked sliding doors from the aft deck. The seating area was raised to maximize amazing all-around views. MLD included this design in their first proposal.

Also, you can find small lobby zone ahead of the saloon. Guest cabins are placed in the port corps. There are starboard and the two VIP cabins. The owners enjoyed their staying in the big communal zones onboard with friends and family. However, architects proportioned comfortably two VIPs, so it offers an option of opening up into an area through a central partition and component of it cupboards which you can quickly stow, leave a spacious cabin of a master with male and female bathrooms.

Aft is placed in the port corps, and you can access it from a companionway on the basic deck. Two guest cabins are further, one of which is for owners.

With the help of another companionway, you can get to the accommodation of crew. It occupies a large part of the starboard corps, and you can access it via sliding door from the saloon to the well-arranged gallery. If you go ahead, you will see laundry area and crew mess and aft.

Mark Smith has said that crucial words in the design were “Polynesian six stars.”

Whereas there is a subject of walnut base and panels in cleaned wenge and oak. They have textured feel. There are no similar cabins in styling and layout. It was used in total 18 types of leather, including stingray and crocodile skin; and the owner’s wife has made a lot of input. Leach said that she had known what she had liked at once, which had been amazing.

Engine room in every room called midship. It houses a Caterpillar C12s 490hp motor carrying a controlled pitch propeller. Also, there are Caterpillar generators with has a capacity of 251kW in total. Every hull has an aft and a thruster.

Other technical characteristics of Hemisphere include the alarm system and a Radio Zeeland monitoring. This system has 550 different assignments like fridge temperatures and rigging loads, navigation, and programmable lighting.

The basic tender called a Scorpion 8.2 meters RIB is inventively housed under the aft deck from which it is set off and restored through ‘bomb doors’ suggesting James Bond barbs. Another tender is a Castoldi RIB with a size 4.5-meter living space at the aft end of the starboard corps, and a quip beam crane launched it via a top-looping door on the interior side of the crops.

After the first voyage of Hemisphere and first felicitous cruise with her holders, it has shown up at the yacht show in Monaco. For the winter season, catamaran locates in the Caribbean where it will be available to choose charters through Burgess.

Due to her size, she can get into places where other catamarans can’t. After that there is no traditional route, keep for a passion from the holder to involve in some world cruising and to appease the family’s desire for diving, but forcing map into the glass of the fly bridge board might be helpful for discussing the facilities.
